We hope you have gone through our first article which is about Cold and cough and its symptoms and also a few homes made remedies to cure it.

But, are we waiting to see our little ones to catch a cold and suffer with it… No, right? 

As it is said… “Prevention is better than cure”. Let us see how can we prevent our babies to suffer from cold and cough. 

Precautions:

  • Try to keep your surroundings clean & dust free. During winter cover the child with Dettol washed sweater & head cap.
  • Make sure breastfeeding mom is not suffering from cold. If so, cover your mouth with a mask while feeding the baby and wash your hand each time when you carry the baby.Mother covering her mouth to spread cold

[Remember through breastfeed common cold will never transfer to baby, it’s through inhaled air].

  • For babies of  6 monFoods to be taken during cold ths and above provide plenty of vitamin-rich fruits and vegetables to boost immunity. [Our future blog says a lot about vitamin-rich recipes.] 

Consult the doctor if you notice the following:

See a doctor if your baby has these symptoms of cold

  • If the child has a fever that lasts over 2 days & seems to be more tired than normal.
  • If the child is getting dehydrated or vomiting repeatedly.
  • The fever is up and down.
  • Babies & toddlers begin to sound wheezy & secreting uncontrolled phlegm.
  • If the child not feeding & reduced urine than normal.
  • If they are unusually quiet.
  • If the child wakes up frequently at night time.
  • If the cold continued for more than 7 days.
  • If the infant has constant ear pain or pulling at ears.
  • If the child has skin rashes.
  • If the child has a chronic or bark like cough?

General tips on giving medicine:

  • If the infant has a fever, give Ibuprofen for pediatric use or consult a doctor what to keep in the medical kit in case of an emergency. (look for recommended dosages on the cover of a bottle or go as per doctor instruction).
  • Don’t give any medicine to a baby younger than 4-month-old, unless your doctor suggests you to do so.
  • Any medicines don’t give 5 doses in one day.
  • Give the right dosage by reading the doctor’s prescription carefully.

Common Cold in kids and home remedies to cure it !

I hope if you are reading this article that means you want to explore more about cold and cough or your baby is suffering with it and you want to know some good homemade remedies. Let us go one by one !!

Some of the home remedies to ease the symptoms are:

  •  First, make your infant comfortable. Provide him/her extra rest and an increased amount of fluids. baby is comfortable during coldIf you find nasal congestion during cold, use saline nasal drops that are available in medical stores. [Dosages – 3 hours once, 2 drops in each nostril.]
  • Steam inhalation

Steam InhalationIf the infant is more than 1 year old give steam inhalation 3 times per day. (Trust me it really loosens mucus in the nose and eases nasal congestion and sinus symptoms).

Note: have a careful look at babies while making them inhale; they should not get burnt by hot steam.

  • Mustard oil massage

Massaging kidDuring the cold period, give mustard oil massage before bath (recommended for both babies & toddlers).

During bedtime, warm mustard oil with small pieces of garlic cloves dipped in it should be massaged.Cloves in mustard oil for massage in cold

Apply mustard oil on betel leaves and slightly warm the leaf on low heat. Place the warm betel leaves on the chest area and also on the back of the kid.

The phenol present in betel leaves contains anti-inflammatory & antiseptic properties that provide quick relief from chest congestion.

  • Medicinal Extracts:

Tulasi and karpur extract for coldPrepare Tulsi ( Ocimum tenuiflorum) extract and karpuravalli (Plectranthus amboinicus) extract.

[Dosage: 3 ml/per day for babies of 6, months and above and 5 ml for toddlers once in the morning (before morning food)]

Tulsi and Karpuravalli is an excellent cure for cough & cold.

  • A very simple & effective method is  Ginger (Zingiber officinale) rasa with a pinch of turmeric (Curcuma longa) powder whichGinger in cold reduces cough & cold. [Recommended for babies 6 months and above].
  • Turmeric+Honey in Warm GheeAdd pinch of turmeric (Curcuma longa) and honey in warm ghee. This (honey) is recommended for babies of 1 year and above.  It gives immediate relaxation in cough. Turmeric and Honey Note: This remedy is quite effective as one of our momsters use it whenever required.   • Breastfeeding

Breast feedingLast but not least, “Breastfeeding your baby will provide antibodies & enzymes that help to protect against illness”.

Note: Home remedies for common cold should be followed only for 4 days, if still cold persists, please consult the pediatrician.

I have tried to cover all the points about Breastfeeding. If you need any other topic to be posted, please do post the name of the topic in the comment box.

I believe you have gone through the other three articles about breastfeeding which explains about breastfeeding, benefits of breastfeeding for both mom and baby and Natural ways to increase breastmilk.

There are few tips which will be helpful to know. They are as follows :

  • Good latch allows your body to produce the hormone prolactin, which is responsible for milk production. Make sure you are holding your baby in the correct position, try offering by sitting upright with your back supported and raise the child level using a pillow. Mom can also try C shape pillow for feeding on the lap.

  •  Holding your baby in the correct position will avoid trapping of gas in baby tummy. 

 

  • Do not give cow’s milk to your baby till they turn 1 year old, because its protein is very difficult to digest by thNo Cow Milke little kidney. 

 

  • No for bottle feed, bottle nipples are suspected for lots of infection as well as the gas filled in the No to Bottlebottle leads to stomach upset for the little wonders. 

 

  • Don’t think you can’t breastfeed if you go back to work. Many mothers expressing the milk using a variety of breast pumps available inBreastpump the market and feed with sterilized bowl-spoon.

 

  • To check whether the infant got sufficient breast milk, just observe per day how many times they wet their cloth. During day time better don’t use a diaper, the cloth is the best way to check. wet diaper
    If the child passes 6 to 8 wet diaper then that should be enough.
    You can reassure the weight gain for every vaccination visit.

I hope you would have given your best to breastfeed your baby 👍😊 There are lots of benefits of breastfeeding for both mom and the kid. (refer our article)

Many of the new moms have gone through a stressful situation and as a result, their Breastmilk supply decreased over a period of time.

But, the good news is that there are various natural ways to increase Breastfeed milk .!! Have a look… 😃

Methods to increase breastmilk naturally

  1.  Keep yourself Stress-free☺️
    Stress plays an important role in decreasing breastmilk (BM). Hence find a way to take rest, nap with baby. Try to assign housework to other members during your nap. 
  2.  Regular suckling by the baby🤱
    Breastfeed your baby every 2 hours once for 6 months, feed on one side for 10 mins then shift to another breast, total spend 20 mins of time. Longer your baby nurses at your breast the more milk will be produced. This is the single most important way to increase your milk production.
  3.  Stay hydrated🥛🥛
    Take plenty of oral liquids including water, juice, and milk.🥤🥤
    Cow Milk: It contains calcium which boosts milk production, drinks 1 glass of milk morning and before bedtime.
    [Limit drinks that contain caffeine like coffee, soda. Too much intake of caffeine can cause irritability to your baby and also it can interfere with your baby’s sleep.]
  4.  Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-gracecum)
    These seeds promotes galactogogue to increase milk supply. It is completely safe for breastfeeding mom and their baby.
    (However, the asthma patient is not recommended to consume.) You can just swallow 1 teaspoon of fenugreek seeds 2 times for 5 days.
  5. Dill leaves + Garlic cloves
    It is rich in fiber, vitamin K, iron, and antioxidants which promotes enough BM and easy to digest. Garlic cloves stimulate lactation (galactagogue). Cook dill leaves with 10 pieces of garlic cloves, consume medium quantity in the morning and night for 3 days.
  6. Mutton and Salmon
    For non-vegetarian eat mutton thrice a week which boost BM.
    Salmon is rich in omega-3, it also helps to boost lactation.
  7. Oatmeal
    It is rich in fiber, thiamine, vitamins, and magnesium, thus helps in promoting milk supply.
  8. Spinach
    It contains iron, folic acid, vitamins which is beneficial for both mom and baby.
  9. Almonds
    Almonds are rich in calories, vitamins & minerals which boost BM. Just soak the 5 almonds overnight & morning grind, mix with milk and drink it.

Please take a tour of your kitchen once. You will find most of the items in the kitchen. If not found, it can be bought. Readily available in the market.

  • Formula feed irritates your baby intestines, but breastmilk is easily digested.
